The map you know

The Mercator projection keeps compass bearings straight—but stretches area more and more as you move toward the poles. It is brilliant for navigation and deeply misleading for comparing size.

02 THE BIGGEST VISUAL MYTH

Greenland looks like Africa.
Africa is about 14× larger.

A high-latitude illusion can become a low-resolution worldview.

On a Mercator map, Greenland's position around 60–80° north multiplies its visual area. Much of Africa sits near the equator, where inflation is small. The result makes them look comparable even though Africa is roughly fourteen times larger.

The correction: no flat world map is perfectly accurate. The problem is using Mercator to answer an area question it was never designed to answer.
